Answers to Plat Map Questions

Assorted Reiser family members owned several parcels of land in sections 23 and 26. This included the east 1/2 of the northwest quarter of section 26, the northeast 1/4 of the northeast quarter of section 26, and all of the southwest quarter of section 23.

Frank Stumpf owned parts of the northwest and northeast quarters of section 23. The exact acreage is not specifically shown, but it can be calculated. The northwest and northeast quarters can contain a maximum of 320 acres. The map shows that August Kassube owned 20 acreas in the northeast part of the northeast quarter. Herman Polker owned an identical piece right below that. Taken together they total 40 acres. Taken together they are the same size as each of the vertical strips owned by Henry Scherer and John M. Reiser on the west side of the northwest quarter. The Scherer and Reiser properties therefore total 80 acres together. Subtracting the land owned by Scherer, Reiser, Kassube and Polker, which totalled 120 acres, from the maximum size of 320 acres means that the size of Frank Stumpf farm was 200 acres.

The school district that served the area surrounding Frank Stumpf's farm was District 7.

Frank Stumpf's farm house was located close to the northern boundary of section 23, right in the center.

HISTORICAL NOTES

The District 7 school, later known as the Reiser School, actually resided on Stumpf land. The D7 school teacher in 1913 and 1914 was Alice Elizabeth Rixon from St. Louis Park. Like many of the D7 teachers, she boarded at the Frank Stumpf home. In 1915 and 1916 she taught school at Minnetonka Mills, before returing to Medina in 1917 to marry August Stumpf, son of Frank. As a married women she resigned from public teaching, but continued an instructional career by conducting Congregational sunday school classes in Wayzata.

As a result of this marriage, Frank Stumpf purchased the two 20-acre lots owned by Kassube and Pohlker to make a 240-acre farm. He then split this into two 120-acre halves and gave one each to his sons, August and Fidel. Fidel's grandson, Dave Stumpf, still lives on a part of this property.
