The widespread availability of finished lumber and the need for schools to accommodate population growth stimulated communities in the 1880s and 1890s to replace their log cabin schools with wooden frame buildings. By 1900 a typical school classroom looked something like this exhibit, with a single teacher's desk at the front, a chaulk board, several rows of desks, and an American flag.
