The mass production of pedal-operated sewing machines like this one revolutionized the home manufacture of clothing. So reliable were they, and so popular, there were actually women still using them up into the 1960s. In some models the sewing machine recessed into a hidden compartment, permitting the top to act as a work surface. Almost all units had long narrow drawers for buttons, thread and other sewing supplies and hand tools. The seamstress would power the sewing machine by pedaling with her feet.
